Supra ''Basic Information'' For P PLATERS and potential owners! Empty Supra ''Basic Information'' For P PLATERS and potential owners!

The purpose of this post was originally destined to be a reply to a thread
in which a P Plater asked about buying a supra and i thought since i was
free i would construct a reply with basic information, However as soon as
i finished the thread was deleted. I thought i would post this on a new thread
as it may be needed again in the future. Mods if this is pointless then feel
free to delete this thread.

TOYOTA SUPRA
FOR P PLATERS

1. Toyota Supras in NA or Naturally Aspirated form are a great and realiable car.
For a P Plate car in all honesty its brilliant, looks are there and the aftermarket
world is there for almost anything you want to do to it.

2. That said remember an NA car is an NA car, dont expect to hit 88MPH and end
up in 1985. However insurance is what i was most concerned about when i got my
supra as it cost a shit load, 2-3K may not be much for someone working full time
with nothing to spend on but their car but for me as a student it hit hard thus in turn
acted as an incentive to keep the car clean and respected.

To begin the desicion you must first choose your prefered Transmission type
•Manual - 5 Speed - W58 GearBoX
Manual - 6 Speed - Getrag v161/v160
Automatic - 4 Speed - Toyota A340E

From that list you can see there are a few alternatives, lets start with the manual
versions..
*Do you prefer a supra for simple enjoyment with the option to sell and upgrade to
a Original Turbo model?

IF YES:
Then a 5Speed Manual supra (AKA model Known as 'SZ') is your best bet

IF NO:

You plan to upgrade the engine or perform a turbo conversion, then you will
require a supra with a stronger gearbox which toyota did release as the
SZ-R model AKA fully optioned NA model meaning you get all those cool little
goodies such as bigger brakes (Optional), Carbon Fibre steering wheel, LSD Diff, etc.

Okay so manuals not your thing then you can opt for the simple automatic
transmission supra AKA the SZ model NA supra. Remember these arnt your
ordinary auto cars they are still fun to drive and you will have no problem
enjoying a supra with and automatic transmission.

Now since we have talked about the Non Turbo Models lets list them to avoid
any confusion:

1.SZ (Base Model) - include w58 Gearbox (5Speed) or Automatic
SZ-R (Optioned Model) - include Turbo Gearbox V160 or v161, Basically this model
is a Turbo supra model without the turbo engine but all other associated parts thus
a good buy if you plan to drop in another engine.

So we have learnt today that there are 2 Non Turbo models. However there is another
catch. 1993-1996.5 Supras compared to 1996.5 -2002 Supras have slight cosmetic
differences. They include the following

SERIES 2

Now since we have all the model confusion out of the way i should mention
that there have been various crashes involving P Platers and Toyota Supras
recently such as the following in which death did occur as a result

MODIFICATIONS?

For the purposes of this clause, a "high performance vehicle" is a vehicle....

....that has had any substantial modification made to the engine of the vehicle to increase the performance of the vehicle (not being a modification made by the manufacturer of the vehicle in the course of manufacture of the vehicle)

So no not alot really, but its upto your driving and attitude when you get pulled
over....if your blasting rap and wearing a dri-fit with a massive cannon then you
will get raped by the cops

Please note this was only intended to be a basic run down of the models and what
not, this was made to give newbies some sort of clue on which they can base
their future research on rather than the usual questions.

I will continue to upgrade this post with usefull information as it comes
